Hi to all those who like myself joined Ian on his devoted love for exploration, selflessness and inspirational journeys all over the globe. My father actually made me go on the Norway, Hardanger Ice field expo as a holiday. We spent some 3 months on beat up training with Ian who led us up Monroes and through Glens to make sure we where upto it, unrelentless drive and determination ensuring all where good enough to go. The hard training actually made the trip enjoyable living in boulder fields, camping beside mirror like lakes and sharing trips to the toilet with a Lemming or three all this combinedand with Ian's poor jokes at precisely the wrong moment made the 4 weeks fly by. A true leader and a man who with my father sort of steered me in the right direction. Thanks Ian
The adventure didn't just start in Norway, it started from the very first weekend we got together.
It wasn't just a case of saying you wanted to go to get on this expedition, you had to prove that you wanted to go.
When I turned up for the acceptance weekend I didn't have the right gear my boots were worn and I had borrowed a warm coat. I was clumsy and I even slipped on the snow and slid off the bank and into the freezing water right up to my chest. I remember feeling the icy water flowing in through the material of my pockets and slowly soaking my skin. I didn't want to show anyone how cold it was, I wanted to show Mr Barr that I had what it took to get on the team.
we had a number of tasks we had to attempt so that we could prove we had what it took to be a member of the team.
Late on the second day came one of the most challenging tasks, trusting your team mates.
Over that weekend we became a team and when it was my turn I threw myself backwards off the stage knowing my team mates would catch me just as I would catch them. We had become something new more than just a group of scouts we'd become a family. Each of us looking out for each other.
Ian Barr made this happen, and I am truly grateful of the opportunity I was given.
