1972 - Ski Trip memories from Ian Goodrick

We must have left Port Glasgow on the morning of 29 March 1972, as we flew by BEA airtours flight Tango 740 from Gatwick. I had seat 19e. The plane was a Comet 4B G-ARCP and the fight time was 1.05 Sadly I can not read the name of the pilot.

We stayed in the town of Engleberg, overlooked by Mount Titlis.

We returned on 6th April on Flight 741, the plane again was a Comet 4B G-APMC. I was still in seat 19e again with a pilot with an unreadable signature.

I have found a small collection of slides. The most interesting is below:

David Niven to the left and Hans 'Bend Ze Nees' the instructor in the middle.

So sad to hear of JKT’s death, am 7th Paisley cub, scout, venture. Slow pick up I live in Buckhamshire now have lived down South for nearly 20 years now. So young and well stupid in teens like we all were he just rode it will admit I thought at times he was barking mad, he had his own way and he ran it like that. Only growing up I appreciate that genius to be able to connect with people at formative times in there life give them life skills they never forget be so influential in there life. He touched 100’s of peoples lives gave them memory’s they never forget. Was camping with a partner for holiday heavy rain and river burst just got up moved tent lots of credit points she asked how can you do that so calm.....answer when I thought about it JTK just get it done. Only as an adult can I see the huge sacrifice and effort he made for others hours and hours a week working away on an activity.

Watching some of the footage of camps brought back great memory’s oh man that brown mini clubman of his stuffed up on back seat with 2 other lads soaking off the hill reeking of sweat and a load of damp gear in the back. Him stopping half way running round car twice and dancing to get cramps out his legs was hilarious. While the big expeditions are important ones I really remember are him on a Friday night saying to seniors going out on Sunday fancy it? Any excuse to get on the hills now that is some of my very happy memory just maybe 3 lads and him he would let you see other sides of him when he was not leading a troop. Got to admit on reflection day he called me into office in old Beild and made me a patrol leader really was a part of my life to know I had his trust not just technical skill but emotional to deal with younger lads and not be a Brat was very special.

Will end with my favourite memory I was on 2 expeditions Granian alps and Hardanger in Norway, which were both amazing and I thank every leader for giving that time as I know with a job and cash what that means now also my Mother for paying for it and wanting that for me. I was young and stupid what 16 and skipped a planning meeting for a school event instead JKT gave me a really hard time over that and threatened all sorts. Second last day when we are still in mountains he walks with me talks to me like a grown up I was not, thanked me for being a very positive member of team gob smacked was not the word. We know we had been fighting up to it but on the hills we put it behind us that lesson stays with me till this day I want to be a big enough man to step back and say well done for what you did and hold no grudge he was a very big man. He lead by example funny enough I never took Geography in school or university and I am really hot on pub quiz Geography questions wonder why that is?

RIP JTK
